The 175-year-old materials company expects the project to create more than 3,000 skilled jobs, effectively doubling its workforce as CEO Wendell Weeks bets on physical infrastructure catching up to digital demand.

Everyone braced for robots to empty out factory floors, yet Corning is doing the exact opposite. The 175 year old glassmaker is partnering with Nvidia to churn out fiber optic cable at a pace that demands three brand new American plants and more than 3,000 skilled hires. The AI boom runs on something far more physical than algorithms: miles and miles of specialized glass. What looked like a threat to human labor is instead reviving an old school industrial workforce most people had written off.

AI is creating jobs at Corning

The headlines about artificial intelligence and employment tend to run in one direction: automation, layoffs, entire professions under threat. At Corning, the American glassmaker founded 175 years ago and best known for kitchenware and smartphone screens, the opposite is happening. Demand tied to AI is pushing the company toward the fastest growth in its history, with plans to roughly double in size.

AI’s hunger for real-world infrastructure

Behind every chatbot and image generator sits a very physical problem: moving astronomical volumes of data between servers at high speed. Copper cable can no longer keep up, and ultra-specialized glass fiber optics have become the backbone of modern data centers. CEO Wendell Weeks puts it plainly: “You often hear that AI is powered by chips, but in reality, those chips are connected by glass.” Without that connective tissue, even the most advanced data centers would slow to a crawl.

Partnering with Nvidia to build 3 new factories

To meet the surge, Corning announced a multiyear partnership on May 15, 2026 with Nvidia, which is investing up to $3.2 billion in Corning, to build three advanced optical manufacturing plants in the United States, spread between North Carolina and Texas. The stated goal is to multiply the company’s US optical connectivity manufacturing capacity tenfold and expand its US fiber production capacity by more than 50%. That expansion translates into more than 3,000 skilled jobs planned to staff the future sites.

Weeks frames the moment as unprecedented for a company nearing two centuries of operation. “As a 175-year-old company, we are going through our fastest period of growth. We will probably double in size in the coming years, and nearly all of our new hires will be in advanced manufacturing, much of it right here in the United States,” he said.

A jolt for traditional manufacturing

The shift is already visible on factory floors. The global rush toward generative AI is injecting fresh energy into an industrial sector often described as losing ground to digitization. Emily Capek, a planning manager at the company’s Wilmington site, described the mood directly: “Right now, the world needs our glass fiber optics to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence. It’s a great feeling on the factory floor.”

The example cuts against the usual narrative. While AI raises real questions for knowledge workers, the technology’s virtual layer still rests on tangible infrastructure, and someone has to build it. For Corning, that means thousands of new engineering and manufacturing roles concentrated in 2 states, attached to a partnership with the most valuable chipmaker in the AI economy.
