The Apple (AAPL) stock ended Tuesday at $325.13, up 2.6% on the day despite the wider market pullback. The stock held around that price point as it traded on Wednesday, briefly touching $327.30.
The rally came as Apple completed its first CEO transition in 15 years. The overall market was weak as John Ternus officially replaced Tim Cook on Tuesday. The S&P 500 fell about 0.4% and the Nasdaq lost 0.7%, making Apple’s outperformance stand out as a company-specific move rather than a result of broader market strength.
Leadership Transition Comes With a Landmark Pay Package
The most significant factor is Apple’s top-level change. Ternus, a 25-year Apple veteran and former head of hardware engineering, officially became CEO on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Cook will be moving into the executive chairman role, a move that will not result in a complete exit from the company.
Shortly after, Apple’s board was quick to put a new compensation package together. Ternus will be paid a $3 million salary, plus an initial restricted stock grant of $2.5 million that will be prorated throughout fiscal 2026. For fiscal 2027, he has a targeted annual equity award of $55 million.
The majority of that award, 75%, is tied to Apple’s total shareholder return compared with the rest of the S&P 500. The balance will be vested over four years. Cook’s compensation will drop to $2 million later this month and he will be offered a $45 million target equity award that includes both time-based and performance-based vesting.
The package is far more conservative than what Apple had offered Cook when he took over as CEO in 2011. The board granted him $376 million in restricted stock at the time, with no performance requirements. Apple later stated that it was a “subjective” decision, a comment that seemed a reference to the unusual situation of Cook replacing Steve Jobs.
The board has a more formulaic approach this time. With 75% of Ternus’s equity award tied to relative shareholder performance, Apple’s directors are showing they want his pay to be closely linked to performance from the outset. It also underscores the importance of having the engineer leading Apple through what may be a significant AI product cycle.
Ternus already has about $110 million worth of prior stock grants from years of leading Apple’s hardware business. So far, investors appear comfortable with the transition. It has been largely treated in the market as a smooth transition, not a big disruption, thanks to Cook staying involved and the product pipeline of Apple giving it a bit more hope.
In late August, Apple announced new Mac mini models based on its first 2 nanometer M6 chip. The company is also set to hold a launch event on September 9, which is widely anticipated to be the iPhone 18 lineup and could introduce Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
That gives Ternus a major public stage only days after taking the CEO job.
Options Market Leans Bullish Into the New CEO Era
There is also healthy optimism in the options market with respect to Apple. CNBC’s options desk was bullish on AAPL this week, and the open interest data indicates that call volume is ahead of hedging as the stock approaches the high end of its recent price range.
Yet, the options picture is not entirely clear cut. According to data released on December expiry, the $250 put is the most crowded strike. Meanwhile, options expect a move to $350 to be about twice as likely as a drop to $250.
That would be more indicative of investors defending their positions from a downside risk and holding a bull position on the base case for the stock, not a large-scale sell-off.
Another key indicator to monitor is implied volatility around Apple’s next earnings. The company’s fiscal Q4 results will be released on October 29 and will be the first quarterly report under Ternus.
Generally speaking, options have been priced in for larger moves than Apple has actually made in recent quarters. That volatility premium could be maintained as investors brace for the first set of earnings behind the new CEO.
Technical Picture: Testing Resistance After the Breakout
Apple’s daily chart is showing a relatively strong bullish setup following Tuesday’s rally. The stock is trading above its 20-day, 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which currently sit at $314.35, $311.02 and $284.68, respectively. RSI-14 is around 61, suggesting momentum is positive but has not yet reached traditionally overbought territory.

The daily pivot stands at $322.39, with resistance at $330.04 and support at $317.48. Apple has already tested the $325.66 area, although some chart watchers have warned that momentum could turn into a bull trap if the stock struggles to move higher from here.
If it can clear up $330 with increased trading volume, the near-term bullish scenario will improve. Conversely, if prices dip below the 20-day moving average and the Bollinger mid-band (which averages the 20-day highs and lows) of $311, it could signal consolidation.
Analyst Targets and What to Watch Next
So far, Wall Street is split on Apple, but the general mood remains somewhat optimistic. Rosenblatt Securities lifted the price target to $303 from $300 on Tuesday with a “neutral” rating. The wider analyst community is focused on the $324 to $335 range, which is near where Apple is currently trading.
That indicates the investors and analysts are still working out what Ternus can do to make the next step in growth. Buybacks and a larger valuation multiple helped prop up Apple’s stock during Cook’s time in office, and now the new CEO must find other growth drivers.
The more hopeful analysts forecast a lot more upside. Some targets are $380 to $400, indicating the potential for Apple to get a further foot up with new AI-powered hardware and product cycles.
The next few most significant catalysts are now apparent for investors. The September 9 product event will mark Ternus’ first major public appearance as CEO and the October 29 fiscal Q4 report will offer the first earnings report of the new era of leadership.
In the meantime, $330 remains the key resistance level to watch, while the $317 area provides an important near-term support zone. Options positioning could also offer clues about investor expectations as both events approach.
