Enphase Enters US Commercial Storage With New IQ Battery C80

Enphase Energy ismoving further into the commercial and industrial energy marketwith the IQ Battery C80, its first battery storage system developed specifically for commercial applications.

U.S. pre-orders have opened for the 80-kWh system, which can be deployed at multifamily properties, smaller commercial buildings and larger C&I facilities. Installations can scale from 80 kWh to 2 MWh, giving project developers flexibility to match storage capacity with a site’s electricity use and operating requirements.

The launch extends Enphase’s distributed power conversion model beyond its solar products and residential batteries. Rather than using a central inverter for battery power conversion, the C80 applies a microinverter-based architecture across the storage system.

Enphase Brings Distributed Power Conversion to Commercial Storage

The IQ Battery C80 is designed to operate alongside Enphase commercial microinverters as part of an all-AC solar and storage system. The configuration avoids the need for central inverters or high-voltage DC coupling, distributing power conversion across the installation instead.

That architecture could be relevant for commercial properties where system availability and expansion options are key design considerations. Reducing dependence on a single central inverter may limit the impact of an individual component failure, while the modular battery format allows additional capacity to be installed as energy requirements change.

Enphase plans to offer the C80 in both 208-volt and 480-volt versions. The 480-volt configuration targets larger commercial and industrial facilities, while the 208-volt model is intended for smaller commercial sites and multifamily properties.

The system also combines battery storage and power conversion within the C80 enclosure. That could reduce some of the equipment and engineering requirements associated with commercial solar-plus-storage projects, although the impact on project costs will depend on site design and installation requirements.

Enphase Power Control adds another layer of system management. The technology is designed to coordinate batteries, solar generation and building loads with existing electrical infrastructure. In some installations, that may help developers avoid or reduce electrical upgrades when adding storage.

Commercial Storage Push Extends Beyond Backup Power

The business case for the C80 is focused on more than resilience. Enphase says the system will support time-of-use energy shifting, demand-charge management and greater consumption of electricity generated by onsite solar.

The battery is also being designed to participate in virtual power plants and grid-services programs. For commercial operators, those capabilities could create additional options for lowering energy costs or generating revenue, depending on local utility tariffs, market rules and available programs.

Adding storage also fills a gap in Enphase’s commercial product lineup. Commercial microinverters can manage solar generation at the panel level, while the C80 adds energy storage and management capabilities. Together, the products give installers another option for building an integrated commercial solar-and-storage system without relying on a conventional centralized architecture.

That does not mean the market will be easy to crack. Commercial and industrial storage is already served by established battery manufacturers, inverter suppliers and system integrators. Adoption of the C80 is likely to depend on project economics, equipment availability, installer familiarity and whether its distributed architecture can deliver measurable advantages over competing designs.

U.S. manufacturing could also factor into project decisions. Enphase expects the C80 to be manufactured at facilities in the United States and has said the system is expected to meet foreign entity of concern, or FEOC, requirements.

For developers pursuing federal tax incentives, domestic production and FEOC compliance could affect project economics. Eligibility will still depend on the details of each installation and the tax rules in force when a project is developed.

The IQ Battery C80 marks a broader shift in Enphase’s commercial strategy. Rather than treating solar generation, storage and energy management as separate systems, the company is positioning them as parts of a single distributed energy platform — an approach that will now have to prove itself in a competitive C&I storage market.
