Gold and Bitcoin Rise Together: Dollar Debasement Trade or False Signal?
September 4, 2026
Sep 5, 2026
In August, gold and Bitcoin experienced a rare simultaneous rise, signaling investor concerns about the state of money. According to the source, this unusual co-movement typically does not occur, as gold is seen as a safe haven during fear while Bitcoin benefits from bullish sentiment. The article, published on September 5, 2026, by The National, notes that both assets climbed as worries about US government debt surpassing $40 trillion, rising inflation, and the dollar‘s outlook prompted investors to seek assets not subject to government printing.
Andreas Anthis of Mashreq Capital explained that when confidence in a currency’s purchasing power erodes, scarce assets are repriced upward, with gold supply limited by mine production and Bitcoin’s supply capped by design. Gold rose above $4,600, and Bitcoin topped $80,000 for the first time since May. However, the dollar has since strengthened, pushing gold down to around $4,300 and Bitcoin below $77,000.
Tony Hallside of STP Partners in Dubai said the simultaneous rise was not coincidental, as investors used different assets to express concerns about money’s purchasing power and government finances. This is part of the dollar debasement trade, where investors sell dollars and US bonds to buy hard assets. Hallside cautioned against treating gold and Bitcoin the same, noting gold’s centuries-long history as a store of value and central bank demand, while Bitcoin remains volatile and behaves like a risk asset during market stress. He dismissed the digital gold label, saying Bitcoin has not consistently demonstrated defensive qualities across market cycles.
Currently, gold and Bitcoin are retreating as the dollar fights back. With potential interest rate hikes, investors are reminded that these assets offer no interest, dividends, or yield, making cash and bonds with 5-6% returns more attractive. Fawad Razaqzada of Forex.com said fears of a hawkish Fed are hitting risk appetite, causing global stocks, gold, and Bitcoin to fall. The dollar has become the safe haven trade.
Recent talk of a dollar collapse was overdone, according to Madhur Kakkar of Elevate Financial Services, who noted that investors positioned for a collapse have been wrong for a decade. Vaibhav Loomba of Klay Group pointed out that the dollar has faced challenges before, such as after the euro’s launch in 1999, yet retained its reserve currency status. Loomba acknowledged short-term challenges from US debt and trade policy but highlighted structural advantages like the size of the US economy, technology sector, and higher interest rates.
Investors face concentration risk due to heavy exposure to US shares, which now account for roughly 60% of global market capitalisation, driven by mega-cap tech companies, said Hamza Dweik of Saxo Bank. He noted a gradual reassessment of US exceptionalism, with fiscal deficits and political uncertainty encouraging diversification. Darren Clarke of Lunaro Financial Services advised avoiding excessive dependence on US assets, suggesting broader portfolios with European, Japanese, emerging market, and UK dividend-paying stocks.
For gold and Bitcoin, balance is key. Anthis believes both can have a place in a diversified portfolio, but Bitcoin remains susceptible to sharp reversals. Over the past 12 months, gold advanced while Bitcoin declined, making them complementary rather than duplicative. Investors should be wary of chasing assets upward, as they can reverse quickly. Some may see the recent dip as a buying opportunity, but the $40 trillion debt pile persists, and the debasement trade may not be dead.
