MasTec Trades at a Premium: Should Investors Buy the Stock or Fold?
September 8, 2026
MasTec, Inc. MTZ is currently trading at a premium compared with the Zacks Building Products – Heavy Construction industry, the broader Zacks Construction sector and the S&P 500 Index, with a forward 12-month price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 20.3. The industry’s average is currently 18.42, with the sector’s valuation being 18.82 and the S&P 500 Index at 20.1.

The premium valuation of MTZ stock stems from multi-decade infrastructure spending trends, especially across AI-related projects like power delivery, grid modernization, data-center construction, fiber connectivity and related infrastructure. Besides, the raised 2026 outlook for revenues, adjusted EPS and adjusted EBITDA, alongside growing backlog trends, adds to the stock’s overvaluation.
However, with the stock trading higher than its industry and sector, the ongoing weakness in MasTec’s Communications segment, macroeconomic and industry-specific uncertainties and issues in cash flow generation are concerning near-term prospects. Such a scenario is expectedly discouraging for investors, as the ongoing heightened optimism could make the stock vulnerable if growth or execution disappoints.
Shares of this Florida-based infrastructure construction company have plunged 19.4% over the past six months, underperforming the industry, the sector and the S&P 500 Index, as evidenced by the chart below.

Communications Weakness Remains a Drag: MasTec’s Communications segment remains a notable weak spot despite the company’s strong consolidated growth. In the second quarter of 2026, segment revenues increased just 6.2% year over year to $888.9 million, significantly trailing the double-digit growth delivered by Clean Energy & Infrastructure and Power Delivery. More concerning, EBITDA declined 11.6% to $73.1 million, while the EBITDA margin contracted 170 basis points to 8.2% from 9.9% a year ago. The deterioration suggests that revenue growth is not translating efficiently into profitability in this business. While management continues to expect Communications revenues of roughly $3.25 billion in 2026, the high-single-digit margin outlook leaves limited room for execution setbacks. Continued pressure in Communications could therefore weigh on consolidated profitability and temper the upside from stronger-performing businesses.
Macro Uncertainty Could Pressure Near-Term Prospects: MasTec remains exposed to a wide range of macroeconomic and industry-specific uncertainties that could affect project timing, costs and customer spending. The company’s own disclosures highlight risks from inflation, interest rates, tariffs, regulatory and policy changes, permitting, supply-chain constraints, labor availability and changes in customer capital-expenditure plans. These risks are particularly relevant because MasTec operates across capital-intensive markets, including clean energy, power infrastructure, communications and pipelines. Higher financing costs or weaker economic conditions could cause customers to delay or reprioritize projects, while inflation in materials and labor could pressure margins on contracts that are already awarded. MTZ also ended the second quarter of 2026 with $2.42 billion of net debt, increasing the importance of maintaining strong cash generation and disciplined execution.
Weak Free Cash Flow Raises Capital Concerns: MTZ’s earnings growth is impressive, but cash generation remains a concern. The company reported negative free cash flow of $59 million in the second quarter of 2026 compared with negative $45 million in the prior-year quarter. For the first six months of 2026, free cash flow was negative $47.6 million against essentially break-even a year earlier.
The key issue is that capital expenditures of $188.3 million during the first half substantially exceeded operating cash flow of $120.3 million. This cash conversion weakness becomes more important as MasTec carries significant debt and continues investing to support its growth ambitions. Management expects operating cash flow to exceed $1 billion for full-year 2026 and leverage to remain below 2x, but achieving those targets will require a meaningful improvement in second-half cash generation. Until that happens, weak FCF could constrain financial flexibility and increase investor concerns around capital allocation.
AI-driven data-center expansion, grid modernization and digital infrastructure spending are creating a favorable demand backdrop for MasTec, alongside other renowned infrastructure peers including EMCOR Group, Inc. EME, Quanta Services, Inc. PWR and Dycom Industries, Inc. DY.
EMCOR benefits from robust AI infrastructure and data-center demand, supported by $15.62 billion of remaining performance obligations and disciplined capital allocation spanning organic investment, acquisitions and shareholder returns. Quanta remains leveraged to grid modernization and power demand from data centers, while pursuing disciplined capital deployment. Dycom is also gaining from fiber and AI-enabled data-center infrastructure, with the second-quarter fiscal 2027 backlog surging 53.2%.
However, labor shortages, tariffs, inflation, permitting delays, elevated rates and potential project-cost pressures remain near-term risks for MTZ as well as the peers, including EMCOR, Quanta and Dycom. Yet, MTZ’s broader exposure to clean energy, pipelines, communications and mission-critical construction offers diversification against these peers.
MTZ’s earnings estimates for 2026 and 2027 have trended upward over the past 60 days to $9.31 per share and $12.77 per share, respectively. The estimated figures for 2026 and 2027 imply 42.1% and 37.2% year-over-year growth, respectively.

AI Infrastructure Boom Fuels Backlog Momentum: MasTec is well positioned to benefit from secular investment in AI, data centers, power infrastructure and clean energy, creating a favorable backdrop for sustained growth. The company’s record 18-month backlog reached $21.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 30% year over year and 5% sequentially, with Clean Energy & Infrastructure backlog rising 58% year over year to $7.8 billion. Power Delivery backlog also reached a record $6.3 billion, reflecting continued award activity, expanding project scopes and growing customer interest in larger, integrated delivery models. The accelerating buildout of data centers and associated power infrastructure should provide additional opportunities across MTZ’s diversified platform. With a 1.2x book-to-bill ratio and strong backlog visibility, MasTec appears positioned to capitalize on these long-term infrastructure spending trends.
Strategic Acquisitions Strengthen Execution Capabilities: MasTec’s acquisition strategy is enhancing its capabilities in attractive, high-growth infrastructure markets while expanding its ability to execute increasingly complex projects. The July 2026 acquisition of The Superior Group is particularly compelling, adding approximately 3,000 employees and a scaled electrical infrastructure platform focused on data centers and other mission-critical facilities.
Superior is expected to contribute $800-$900 million of revenues and $100-$115 million of adjusted EBITDA during the remainder of 2026, making the deal immediately accretive to earnings and cash flow based on management’s preliminary estimates. More importantly, the combination expands MasTec’s ability to offer comprehensive solutions to hyperscalers, developers and other demanding customers. Management believes the combined capabilities can improve speed, quality and certainty of execution. MasTec’s diversified operating model and strong second-quarter 2026 performance demonstrate its ability to integrate growth opportunities and expand margins.
MasTec is benefiting from secular investments in AI infrastructure, data centers, grid modernization and clean energy. Its record 18-month backlog, acquisition of The Superior Group and upward earnings momentum add additional support to its prospects.
However, these strengths are offset by significant near-term concerns. Communications remains under pressure, with second-quarter EBITDA declining 11.6% and margin contracting 170 basis points. Free cash flow was negative $59 million in the quarter, while net debt stood at $2.42 billion, increasing the importance of improved cash conversion.
Moreover, MTZ stock has fallen 19.4% over the past six months despite the favorable infrastructure backdrop. At 20.3 times forward earnings, the stock also trades above its industry and sector averages.
While MasTec’s backlog, AI exposure and acquisitions provide a credible rebound catalyst, weak cash flow, Communications softness, leverage and premium valuation make a sustained recovery uncertain. Thus, MTZ stock’s current risk-reward profile remains challenging, supporting its Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). So, investors are currently advised to steer clear of MasTec until the trends move more in favor of the stock. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
