Nvidia’s next act is bigger than selling AI chips: Chart of the Day

September 2, 2026

Custom AI chips are one of the biggest threats to Nvidia’s dominance. CEO Jensen Huang’s answer is to make money from them anyway.

Nvidia (NVDA) just put $3.5 billion into MediaTek, a Taiwanese chipmaker, which will help customers build custom AI chips that plug into Nvidia’s broader systems. Meanwhile, Anthropic committed $35 billion to rent Nvidia-powered computing capacity from Lambda, a specialized AI cloud provider.

Those numbers aren’t apples to apples. The first is money Nvidia is investing. The second is money Anthropic has agreed to spend on cloud computing. But the deals point toward the same long-term plan.

Huang wants Nvidia to become the architecture of AI, not merely its dominant chipmaker.

Stripped to its bare bones, an AI factory takes in electricity and data and outputs tokens, the currency of AI. Or, as Huang recently put it, “The input is electrons, the output is tokens.”

For every gigawatt of data-center power capacity, Nvidia estimates its revenue opportunity rises as it adds CPUs, networking, and other systems around its GPUs.

On its most recent earnings call, Nvidia said its revenue opportunity for each gigawatt of AI-factory power capacity has climbed from roughly $18 billion with Hopper to $25 billion with Grace Blackwell and $40 billion with Vera Rubin.

That last one isn’t just a newer GPU. Vera Rubin combines Nvidia’s newest CPU and GPUs with its own networking, memory, and other infrastructure around them. That rising opportunity comes from Nvidia selling more of the factory around the GPU.

MediaTek pushes the strategy one step further.

Its customers can build chips that compete with Nvidia GPUs, then use NVLink Fusion to connect those chips into Nvidia’s broader data-center architecture. Nvidia hasn’t disclosed what it can make from a factory when someone else supplies the main AI chip. But losing the chip no longer necessarily means losing the rest of the sale.

Amazon (AMZN) shows how this can work at scale. AWS plans to add 2 million Nvidia GPUs while also connecting its homegrown Trainium AI chips more deeply into Nvidia’s architecture. Nvidia is positioning itself to participate either way.

The push to build more capacity attacks another familiar AI bottleneck. First, it was chips. Then power. Now money is joining the list.

A factory is useful because of the economic output it produces over years. Nvidia increasingly wants Wall Street to think about compute the same way, as infrastructure that can be financed against future demand. It has teamed with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR around an effort to mobilize more than $500 billion. Nvidia has trounced the broader chip universe by selling the AI boom’s most valuable piece of hardware.

Now Huang is reaching beyond the chip — for the architecture around it.
